SHEBA - German Shepherd cross, female, 8 months approx, medium size.

A little girl of about 8 months has come to us in a very sad way.

Mange was the main problem. Mange is a mite that burrows under the skin causing it to thicken and crack. You know what it is like to have an itch, now imagine that all over your body. The only relief is to scratch and chew until your skin bleeds because the pain blocks out the itching. The broken skin means infection soon sets in.

Sheba's her feet were swollen and painful. Her face is just a sin and her skin was swollen, hot, smelly and bleeding in some places. After seeing my vet she is on antibiotics to treat the infection and other medication to kill the mites and help her skin to recover.

Mange often sets in because a dogs immune system has been compromised by lack of food. If the owner of this dog had treated her to a course of Stronghold (drops on the back of the neck like flea treatment) then Sheba would not have suffered for months and required a lot more expensive treatment.

It took three months for Sheba's hair to grow back. She is now in a loving and caring home and looks a different dog.

Please report any animal in this condition to an animal rescue, RSPCA, or council dog warden. All of these will help.
